Wednesday, 28 Oct: We’re doing class like it’s 1999

As part of our unit on technology, we’re doing to do class next Wednesday like it’s 1999. That means no laptops (unless I get a letter from disability resources and services that you need one), and of course no taking notes on your phones, ipod touches or anything else as a substitute (those devices are still banned). It’s just pen and paper. For some of you, this will be business as usual. For others, I’ll be using overheads, and if possible or necessary, CDs and DVDs.

Just be glad I didn’t say 1979.

Student Association Opportunity for COMS minors

[The AHSA is super active and receives some support from the department. As we are a department of Art History and Communication Studies, they are hoping to get some communication studies minors involved and to start developing CS-themed activities]

To all Communications Studies students,

The Art History Students Association (AHSA) wants to build a stronger relationship with the Communication Studies student body!

We have a new executive VP position open to all undergraduate COMS students currently registered in the minor concentration program. The VP Communications Studies will act as a liaison between the Communication Studies student body and the AHSA. He or she will be expected to attend biweekly meetings and represent the undergraduate COMS students within the council and department. We strongly encourage students of all years to apply – no council experience is required!

This is a great way to get involved with departmental activities and help us forge a better (and more communicative!) relationship between Communications Studies and Art History students.

Inquiries or applications can be sent to lauren.diezdaux@mail.mcgill.ca, or please come by our open meeting this Wednesday, October 21st at 5:30 in W-220.

AUS Peer Tutoring Program

The AUS Peer Tutoring Program is a free and voluntary based peer tutoring service that provides tutoring on an individual or group basis by matching a student who has requested tutoring for a course with a qualified student who has already taken the same course and has earned a minimum grade of A- or B+ if their program GPA is 3.5 or above.

Currently, we have tutoring for many arts courses, one of which is COMS 210. For more information on the Peer Tutoring Program, to become a tutor or to be tutored, students may visit the AUS Office located in the basement of Leacock in the Arts Lounge, room B12 or the Peer Tutor Coordinator, Melissa Tam, at <mailto:tutoring@ausmcgill.com> > .

Volunteer Position Available

Volunteer Position- Art Souterrain

On the 27th of February, 2010, Art Souterrain will launch the largest contemporary art exposition ever seen in Montreal. For fifteen consecutive days Montreal’s underground city will be transformed by the works of one-hundred renown artists into a cultural mecca of sorts in order to celebrate Quebecois and Canadian dynamisms.

Presently, Art Souterrain is looking for Cultural Mediators. Throughout Nuit Blanche, mediators must bridge the gap between contemporary artistic practices and the general public.

Art Souterrain is offering students the opportunity to actively involve themselves within the art world by volunteering their services and their skills for a huge cultural event. Art Souterrain’s success depends on the mediators’ ability to gather and present knowledge in a clear, yet dynamic, manner. Together, we hope to promote contemporary artistic practices by creating an environment which gives the public access to the arts and cultural knowledge.
